MDS concludes Joplin project
JOPLIN, Mo. — Nearly two years after a massive tornado struck Joplin, Mennonite Disaster Service has closed its project site.
On May 22, 2011, a tornado more than a mile wide cut through the center of Joplin, destroying more than 7,000 homes. The town’s infrastructure was heavily damaged, including the hospital and school. The tornado claimed 159 lives, making it the second deadliest in U.S. history.

MDS ends historic 7-year recovery effort in New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS — After spending seven years and $8 million responding along the Gulf Coast to hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Mennonite Disaster Service has formally closed its last project here. About 70 MDS personnel, Mennonite leaders and local pastors, disaster response workers and community members gathered May 16 at MDS headquarters in New Orleans for a commemoration ceremony.
