Who is God?
We live in a culture in which most people have little or no idea who God is.
Our culture points people toward a “secular” or non-religious worldview — a way of looking at the world that does not include the existence of God. Even if people believe God exists, many doubt we can really know who he is, so they make up a God that fits their own needs or worldview.

Penetrating gaze
In a culture where appearance is paramount, it’s easy to focus on what we do rather than the condition of our hearts.

Sacred garden
My 7-year-old daughter recently learned about natural resources and the environment at school. As we drove home one day, she told me in no uncertain terms that we must start recycling. She adores the Alabama wilderness and believes recycling is one of our responsibilities in caring for it.

Creation to Creator
I am a Weather Channel fanatic. When asked to defend my obsession, I usually explain that I live in the Deep South where thunderstorms and tornadoes occur year round, so I need those “Local on the 8s” updates with the nifty regional radar to know when storms are coming.

Becoming a neighbor
One day, a Jewish scholar tested Jesus, asking exactly what he must do to get eternal life. Jesus asked him what’s written in the Law, and the man quotes some Scripture: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind,” and “Love your neighbor as yourself’” (Luke 10:27 NIV).

A healing faith
I’ve always been a bit uneasy when it came to Jesus’ healings. Jesus connects many of the healings in the gospels to a person’s faith, but we know God doesn’t always heal when the faithful ask.

What’s my purpose?
As Christians, we think a great deal about God’s call in our lives: What career should I choose? Should I get married or stay single? Should I work or stay at home with the kids?

The end is near
As a teenager in the early 1980s, my friends and I believed nuclear war was imminent — and, with it, the Apocalypse and return of Jesus. We read Hal Lindsey’s books, watched apocalyptic films and tried to understand how to live in the shadow of annihilation and the Second Coming. Often, however, I just hoped selfishly that Jesus (and nuclear war) would hold off long enough for me to graduate from high school, fall in love and get married.

The King and I
Once, there was a king who decided to square accounts with his servants. One of them owed well over a billion dollars. The servant couldn’t pay up, so the king ordered the servant, his family and his possessions to be auctioned off at the slave market to recoup some of the loss. The servant, however, begged for more time, and the king took pity on him. The servant’s debt was erased.
