Preventing sports injuries

Hosting homeless families
The abundant participation of many members enabled us to host Warm Nights in our church March 6-13. Warm Nights is a program for homeless individuals and families supported by 15-20 neighborhood congregations. Each night 20-25 adults and children were served a hot meal and given lodging.

Evidence of resurrection
On Palm Sunday, for special services we brought in Don Bierle of FaithSearch.org, who shared information on the historical reliability of the Scriptures and evidence for the resurrection. Many people reported this helped them in their faith journey. Several were moved to cross the line of faith in Jesus.

MILWAUKEE — Twice before, Ahmed Ali Haile had approached death’s door. A bout of cerebral malaria almost felled him as a teenager. Years later, a rocket mortar shattered his leg. He lived to father a third child and continue peacemaking work.

False freedom
This is a response to those who assume modern Christians are ethically free to “Christianize” things clearly forbidden in Scripture. Some atheists have expressed their ideal as being totally free to follow their desires. Such freedom is quite different from embracing the truth that makes us free, offered to us by the Master. Self-centeredness is a false freedom totally opposite of self-denial.

Wars without end
In my lifetime the U.S. has fought almost continuous wars. World War II phased right into the Cold War, which led to the Korean, Vietnam and now Gulf wars in quick succession, to say nothing of innumerable lesser wars. The public conscience has become indifferent to the point where the president is expected to hunt down and kill our enemies. The killing of Osama bin Laden, while costly military actions are under way in Iraq, Afghanistan and now Libya, was seen as a great day for America.

Gifts turned away
My heart swelled with gratitude as I read in the May 2 issue about Mennonites who are blessing the world with their God-given gifts. Pride in my denomination rose as I read about the new Mennonite Church USA cabinet-level position to focus on immigration issues and antiracism work, with Iris de Leon-Hartshorn’s appointment as director for transformative peacemaking. All the ways my church responds to the needs of the world make me thankful.
