Remembering H.B. Schmidt
On Nov. 11 we remembered and celebrated the life of our former pastor H.B. Schmidt and his wife, Rose. We recalled his ministries in the area of peace work during tumultuous times. Various speakers and family spoke of his accomplishments and shared memories.

Selling soybeans for mission
The annual Foods Resource Bank walk and community event was held in Bloomfield. The local project sold 2,990 bushels of soybeans, and we were able to send along $33,000 for a partnering project in the Dominican Republic.

48 hours of continuous prayer
“Reveal/48-Stepping into the blessings of God’s Kingdom” was 48 hours of continuous prayer held at Clinton Frame beginning on a Sunday evening and going through Tuesday evening. This was an important time of prayer for our congregation as we sought to be like Jesus.

HESSTON, Kan. — Brothers Bob and Paul Mullet remember well the station wagon that brought their family to Hesston in 1958. Their parents, Roy and Bess Mullet, were moving the family from a farm in Montana to Kansas so their five sons wouldn’t have to commute 25 miles to attend high school.

Boycott convention
“It hurts more when it’s your blood.” Many of the immigrants targeted by Immigration Customs Enforcement, and Immigration and Naturalization Service, as well as many local law-enforcement authorities, are people of Spanish-speaking descent. Many of us of Spanish-speaking descent have our roots in either Spain, the Caribbean, Mexico, Central or South America. When our people are targeted and discriminated against, it hurts us Americans of Spanish-speaking descent.

Fruitful methods
It was refreshing to read Tiffany Aurora’s “Surrender All the Pieces to God, Who Has Power to Save” (Jan. 3). Associated as she is with the witness of Christian Peacemaker Teams, there is no doubting her passion for peace and justice in our strife-torn world. She puts her finger on an important truth: “Reconciliation can happen only when God reaches down and touches lives.”

Don’t abandon ship
In a post on the Mennonite Weekly Review website, Laura Amstutz claimed that I and perhaps Tim Nafziger “suggest it is time to abandon the Mennonite church and form something else.” [This was part of a discussion on the MWR blog about Myron Augsburger’s proposal for an Alliance of Anabaptists in North America (MWR, Jan. 3). — Editor]
