MB Confession of Faith gets Spanish study guide

By Elmer A. Martens

FRESNO, Calif. — José Elizondo, assistant conference minister for the Pacific District Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches, is smiling. A shipment of about 90 copies of the study guide Convociendo & Viviendo Tu Fe (Knowing and Living Your Faith) arrived in Fresno from Paraguay this summer.

Knowing and Living Your Faith is the Confession of Faith of the International Community of Mennonite Brethren.

The translation was done by Rolando Neyra Alemán of Peru. Printing was done in Asuncion, Paraguay.

Now Elizondo has resources for in-service training of pastors.

Some sessions with Hispanic pastors have been held to introduce the study manual with suggestions on how to use it. Elizabeth Thieszen, a former missionary to Mexico, has assisted in some of the presentations.

Elizondo will make contacts with the Latin American Mennonite Brethren Conference in Texas for possible pastoral workshops. He also travels to Omaha, Neb., occasionally and plans conversation with pastors there.

The study guide, published in English in 2008, is available in German, French, Telegu and Spanish. Translations in Portuguese, Japanese and Russian are in process.

Sixteen writers from the global MB church contributed commentary and questions as study helps for the Confession of Faith, adopted in 2004 by the 19 member conferences of the International Community of the Mennonite Brethren Church.

Copies of the 135-page study guide in Spanish are available for $9 plus shipping from the Pacific District Conference office, 1717 S. Chestnut, Fresno, CA 93702. English copies are available from Kindred Press.
