Time capsule opened
In September Beatrice Mennonite Church celebrated its 50th anniversary in the current church building. During worship service, short segments of Beatrice Mennonite’s history through the building of this church was shared with the congregation. These segments were as follows: on Aug. 22, from the beginning to the decision to build; Aug. 29, site selection and memories of the Fairview School that some current members attended; Sept. 5, signing the construction contract and groundbreaking; Sept. 12, laying the cornerstone, construction; and Sept. 19, dedication of the new church. Many past members and out-of-state members attended the Sept. 19 service. The time capsule from the cornerstone was opened and the contents were viewed. The capsule will have items added and replaced behind the cornerstone for the next generation to take out and remember.

God’s greatness
I appreciated the column by Jane Yoder-Short, “Blinded by a Narrow View” (Living the Story, Oct. 25). Christians have given people an easy target to try to prove that there is no God. We have made God so small.

Chosen women
About the same time as I read the wonderful news of Sara Wenger Shenk being inaugurated as president of Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary (“New AMBS President Preaches One Loyalty,” Nov. 1) I was reading a book I had picked up from a discarded book table: Female Characters of Holy Scripture in a Series of Sermons by Isaac Williams. Publication date is 1859. Each of 30 sermons deals with one woman of the Bible. The language is pious, ornate, wordy, but the writer’s conclusions are clear: Woman’s role is suffering, silence and submission. Nothing more.
