End of an era

By Edgar Stoesz Akron, Pa.

Were you impressed as I was? The Sept. 20 edition of MWR reports the deaths of four longtime missionaries: Ramoth Burkhalter, 42 years of service in India; Sophia Brown, 40 years in Taiwan; Nancy Conrad, 16 years in India and three years in Ethiopia, plus years of U.S. service programs; and Marie Shenk, seven years in Israel and Palestine plus 14 years at Eastern Mennonite University, plus years alternating between EMU and the Middle East.

We are nearing the end of a great missionary era. These hardy and dedicated pioneers are dying off, but they leave us with many inspirational memories of their courage and lifelong commitment. They helped to internationalize the Mennonite church.
